WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL

“So parents will have an option, rather than sending their kids back to the same old school after they’ve been through some rehabilitation and/or therapy, just to fall into the same old behaviors.”

Jacci See - Vice President

ABR/M, CRB, CRS, e-Pro, GREEN, ILHM, AHS, MCNE

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL

“I know first-hand that recovery from addiction is most difficult for adults, and even more for adolescents. My only sibling, my older brother, struggled with alcoholism for over 30 years and died at the age of 52 from heart failure. If there is anything I can do to help students in need learn to live healthy and productive lives, I must try. Horizon High School provides that opportunity for them in a safe, supportive environment.”

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL

“I really believe in the mission and goals of Horizon High School. We lost our son, CJ Norwell, to mental illness and addiction on May 18, 2013. CJ’s issues began in high school. If he would have had access to a school like Horizon, we might have had a different outcome.”

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL

“Originally, I gave time to Horizon High School because addiction, and the related mental health issues, have touched my family, and I know how a community like HHS would have helped them. And I continue to give my time because I can see how this school has helped change the lives of so many young people in my community.”

Ken Adams

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL

BS, UW-Madison Secondary Education, Social Studies

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL

“Spending twenty+ years in a high school, I know the pressures on students to “fit in”. HHS creates a space for students to follow their own best instincts, and have a community supporting their growth. Traditional high schools don’t have this capacity. Instruction and success have to meet students “where they are.” Horizon is this place.”

Paul Moberg (1949-2022)

Research Professor, Population Health Institute -School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
BA and MS - Marquette University
PhD - University of Wisconsin-Madison
Joined the Horizon High School Board in 2013, was a member of the advisory committee during the school's creation in 2004.

WHY I GIVE MY TIME TO HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL

“I have a long-standing interest in adolescent treatment and recovery. I have been involved in research on recovery schools since 1993 and hope to be able to help apply some of what I have learned by working with Horizon High School.”

Journal Articles for Board

In 2007, our former advisor and board member Paul Moberg and colleagues published several scholarly, peer-reviewed articles in the Journal of Groups in Addiction and Recovery. These provide good references to what Horizon and other recovery schools are doing.
